Licensing

ROAD LICENSING

Introduction

The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA), is tasked, among others ,with the functions of issuing, renewing, cancelling and amending Road Service Licence.

Prior to the establishment of SUMATRA, the above function was performed by CTLA and RTLAs for the Pan Territorial and Regional Licenses respectively.

Procedure

1. Application Form


The procedures for applying Road Service Licence are as follows

a) An application form is filled in duplicate
b) The application forms must be attached with:

  • Vehicle Registration Card
  • Vehicle inspection Report
  • Valid Insurance Certificate
  • Previous Licence ( for renewals)

c) The duly filled forms are submitted to SUMATRA offices and Regional Offices (RAS) in the respective regions

2. ISSUANCE OF LICENSES
a) Regional and Urban Licences


For Regions with a Zonal office or SUMATRA branch, the licences are issued by Zonal office/Branch, under the guidance of Regional Administrative Secretary except Dar es Salaam Region.

Regional Teams issue the Regional Licences in the Regions which have no SUMATRA Branch or Zonal office.

b) Pan Territorial Licences

The Pan Territorial Licences are issued at Zonal Offices and Headquarters.

c) Time Tables

Zonal offices issue Pan - Territorial Time-tables in consultation with the Headquarters.

License and its conditions


The License issued carries the conditions of licence and license stickers. The License sticker must be displayed on windscreen of a vehicle and the conditions retained by the vehicle owner.

Road service licence fees /charges

a) Application Form


Application form available at SUMATRA offices.
Application processing fee is Tshs. 5,000.

c)Short Term licence fees

Short term licence fees are as follows.

i. Where the Licence is for a period not exceeding 7 days .......... Tshs. 5,000
ii. Where the licence is for a period which exceeds 7 days .. Tshs. 7,500
iii. Where the licence is for period which exceeds one month but does not exceed three months .. the appropriate three month rate.
