Sumatra and RSR of South Africa signs MoU

The Director General of the Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) Mr. Gilliard W. Ngewe and the CEO of the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) of the Republic of South Africa Mr. Nkululeko Poya have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two Authorities yesterday 12th October 2017. The event was witnessed by various members of SUMATRA management team including the Director, Legal Services, Director, Internal Audit, Acting Director, Railway Regulation, Manager, Regional Operations and other officials of SUMATRA and the RSR.


The main purpose of the MoU is to facilitate technical co-operation in aspects of railway safety regulation with special focus on technical advice, consultation, information sharing, experience sharing as well as capacity building.

Following the MoU signing event which was held at SUMATRA headquarters in Dar es Salaam, the two CEOs elaborated that various approaches will be used to make the cooperation successful including personnel exchange, seminars, conferences as well as workshops on new technology, procedures and strategies in specific areas of railway safety regulation, new railway construction and maintenance.

This cooperation is expected to benefit SUMATRA in ongoing effort to improve railway transport and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) construction projects which are under way in Tanzania.
